Safeway has a fleet of more than a thousand trucks that will eventually run on biodiesel fuel. This gradual phase-in will reduce Safeway’s carbon output by an estimated 75 million pounds. More companies are associating with cleaner practices as consumer awareness of the environment grows.
Wal-Mart has pledged to sell 100 million compact fluorescent light bulbs, saving both the consumer in energy and replacement costs. CFL’s has the equivalent candle power of more the power hungry incandescent bulb. Safeway has also purchased 87,000 megawatts of wind energy, which power its fueling stations.
