According to a two week study done by Men’s Health, the foods you buy at the groceries tend to not he very healthy for you. Over processed foods strip away anything beneficial from the foods, and replace that empty space with sodium, partially hydrogenised, yellow 40, and just about anything you would need a chemistry degree to understand.
With that said, the top 125 foods which are actually as close as starting from scratch as you can get have been listed. Taste is a factor also, and the list that was constructed to have food which you could actually see yourself eating.
Something can be said about the center of any grocery store. You find preservatives, artificial flavoring, additives to maintain color and taste for longer shelf life, and foods with more carbon bonds then you would prefer. That’s why shopping at the perimeter of the store has always been the best bet. The produce section isn’t there by chance, the groceries usually structure it that way to get you to see the freshest ingredients first. After that it takes you to the spice section, followed by the dairy and meat sections. The entire time you still are following the perimeter of the store. Finally after those sections you come to the middle of the store, which you’ll find items a bit more dated. You’ll find canned ingredients with more sodium then the fresh versions, and frozen dinners which include partial or fully hydrogenised oils.
In some cases people can’t wait to eat a well prepared meal and head to local liquor stores to buy groceries. Partially this is due to local grocery stores being far a few between, and the time involved in preparing something from scratch.
It’s easy to blame fast food and school vending machines for the health problems people face today. The fact is people are busier and the food still needs to be prepared somewhere, and by someone else. The opportunity cost of being busier is we take what we can get, and deal with it in terms of prescription drugs down the line.
The way we eat and the items stock in groceries won’t change overnight, and the ingredients will continue to do what they were made to do: keep food on the shelf longer. A change in diet usually involves an economic change, but the list has foods which are cheap and healthy. And with 125 items on the list, you’ll have something new every day.
