Microsoft is back in the news again in its continuing bid to acquire Yahoo. Its 50 billion offers present an opportunity to rival Google’s current hold on the search engine market. With Google’s acquisition of Double-Click, the search engine giant controls two thirds of the internet advertising market. Interestingly enough, for Microsoft to acquire Google, it would require about half of their net worth.
Innovation drives the market; currently Microsoft is toting the new Vista operating system, while Google is expanding partnerships with media corporations. Yahoo’s current talks may be due to its lack of a new product to offer.
The future giants in the market will depend on who controls the user generated content on the internet. This is typically made by the average free lance writer. The publishers will distribute that content with very little overhead as to production. Eventually we might see free lance writers paying to have their content distributed the same way text link ads are sold now. No longer will a website need to be linked to but the information would be the destination with the community built around it. Sounds pretty much like a blog, but the article would be the domain itself. The system of domains would be replaced by keywords which would be shared by relevant articles. Having everything tagged in such a way makes keywords the actual place you would go to for exactly the content you need.
