Both sides of the issue are now preparing their arguments after one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. With 33 dead this tragic event is worst school shooting since the Columbine shootings 8 years ago.

Politicians for stronger gun controls believe that making it tougher to acquire guns will decrease the amount on the street. Gun rights advocates believe if everyone was armed, someone would have taken out the killer before he committed his 32 acts of heinous murder. Both sides of the argument agree that laws need to be changed, but did the law really fail here?

The current system requires a waiting period of four weeks to purchase and acquire a gun. Background checks and the gun sellers own digression were a few of the controls in place. Assault guns are outright banned from being sold along with silencers. Committing a crime with a gun is a felony and even being in possession of a gun during a criminal act is a felony. So what process broke down here?

Well the killer bought the first 9mm glock on March 13, waiting exactly four weeks, then purchasing the 22m pistol. The gun seller at the time thought that Cho looked like a normal student and sold him the guns. He later admitted he felt terrible for selling Cho the guns he used to kill 32 people with. It seems the checks to keep an obvious criminal from purchasing a gun works, but not an average normal citizen that appears to be ligitimate.

So let’s take a look at the checks in place to recognize odd behavior in individuals. This area now covers something different; the right to be who you are without fearing being incarcerated for being different. I’ll cover that in my next article.
