The news bring both the disturbing details of the terrible events that happened Monday, but it also shows the strength of the human spirit as the students and their families cope with the sudden loss of 32 innocent lives. Let’s focus on the latter. What ended with a “defiant” candle light vigil for the fallen students, professors, brothers, sisters, mothers, daughters, friends, and everyone that had someone precious to them taken away was a symbol of strength of the community.
News of selfless compassion and sacrifice brought tears to people’s eyes as news of several heroic events was told. Some people can only talk about what these people did; to board up a door with no lock with your own body to keep a killer out. Even as bullets pierced the door, Liviu Librescu shown the ultimate act of compassion and continued to hold the door closed protecting his students. The students in the German studies class who after witnessing the soulless destruction of Cho in his first rampage in the classroom, also boarded up the door in an attempt to keep him from entering again. Even as the killer fired into the door in an attempt to force his way in, they continued to hold the door.
Even celebrities are coming forth to give their condolences like Chris Richardson, Simon Cawl, and Macy Gray.
While it may seem the details of why and how are important, it’s the healing process that is most important. While we will come to know all the details of this terrible event eventually, we have to remember it can take a lifetime to heal the unseen wounds.
